Answers
  1. WHY WON'T THE BOT DCC ME THE MANUAL?

I'm using mIRC and having problems trying to get the bot to DCC me the Word version of the manual. I can get the Adobe pdf one ok, but when I try the Word version nothing happens. I also get a strange message in my status window.

    -
DCC Send from BotName rejected (file type ignored)
    -

This is a curious default security setting in some versions of mIRC. All incoming DCC file tranfers of *.exe,*.com,*.bat,*.dll and *.ini are automatically rejected for you.

This setting can be changed in mIRC version 5.61 and this is how you do it safely.

1: Click on the DCC Options Icon on the toolbar. DCC options button on the mIRC toolbar

2: Under DCC general options: Set 'On Send request' to 'Show get dialog'

DCC general options - Set 'On Send request' to 'Show get dialog'

This will allow you to vet incoming DCC file transfers of allowed file types by opening a request dialog box each time a request comes in. We strongly advise you against using the 'Auto-get...' options.

3: Under DCC folders options: Untick 'Ignore file types'

DCC Folder and File Options - Untick 'Ignore file types'

This will remove the file type restrictions.

    4: Click OK :)

You should now be able to receive the file by typing:

    /msg <BotName> HANDBOOK <your_password> word

Alternatively, if you are not happy to adjust your DCC settings, the Word manual can be downloaded from this website by clicking here.

BACK TO QUESTIONS

  1. WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO GET MY OWN BOT?

Placing Bots on IRC channels have always been problematic to organise, hopefully we have made things a much easier with our Channel Manager.

BEFORE YOU START:- make sure that the majority of Operators on the channel want a Bot there. It will only lead to trouble if not previously discussed.

When satisfied that this is the case, simply EMail chanman-admin@vwe.net the following information. An online form for this will follow shortly :)

    1. BotName and a second choice if the first is not available.

    2. Your choice of UserName at vwe internet, again with a second choice. We will use it to make up part of your Bot's IRC Address.

    3. Your IRC Network Name. e.g. ChatNet, Undernet, IRCnet

    4. Your usual Nick on IRC.

    5. Your usual IRC Address.

If you are unsure, this information can be obtained by typing the following command into your IRC client. The report it generates can be found in your status window.
    /whois <your_nick>
We suggest you copy the entire report to us. Here is a typical example:

    /whois Mark
Mark is mark@some.machine.vwe.net * Marky Mark
Mark using irc.vwe.net vwe internet's IRC Server
Mark has been idle 8hrs 26mins 12secs, signed on Fri Dec 17 10:27:00
    Mark End of /WHOIS list.
    1. Your password for Bot access and commands. It must be a minimum of 6 characters or numbers. Preferably a mixture of the two. Silly Passwords will be rejected by us. Please try to avoid dictionary words, your favourite band name or other such obvious words.

    2. Your Email Address for the ADMIN Field. Users will need this in order to contact you as the Bot administrator. It can be any Email address of your choice. Please note that Free EMail addresses are not acceptable. These include hotmail.com, yahoo.com, etc, etc.

    3. Your full name, postal address and contact telephone number for invoice purposes.

BACK TO QUESTIONS

  1. THE BOT DOESN'T RECOGNISE ME - WHAT'S WRONG?

Most likely you have changed your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or are using an internet address that's not known to the Bot for your username. Before you can use any of the Bot's commands you must 'identify' yourself to it by using the IDENT command.

If you issue the following command the Bot should allow you access.

    /msg BotName IDENT <your_password> <your_username>

BACK TO QUESTIONS

  1. WHAT IS SENTINEL AND WHY DO I NEED IT?

Sentinel is an additional bot designed to preserve channel status in the event a Channel Manager bot is lost.

Issue the SENTINEL command in your Channel Manager's party line for more details on Sentinel.

BACK TO QUESTIONS

  1. CAN CHANNEL MANAGER ENTERTAIN?

    Yes!

Channel Manager boasts an exciting range of add-on modules; serving refreshments, playing interactive games and even a strip tease!

Issue the ENTERTAINMENT command in you Channel Manager's party line for more details on the available Entertainment Modules or email chanman-admin@vwe.net
